turtles at Dos Ceibas' beach
At the beach of Dos Ceibas you can observe the amazing nesting and birth of turtles. During the night the turtles go out to the beach to finally find a place out of the scope of the high tides, then they remove the sand with their fins and excavate a hole from 40 to 60 centimeters where they deposit their eggs (from 85 to 120). On having finished the spawning they refill the hole and compress the surface, to finally, as many others have done for millions of years before them, head back to the ocean.
Approximately 2 months later, the newborns emerge from their nests, generally during the night, to begin their wonderful journey across the beach to the ocean water.
Egg-laying happens at our beach from April to September.
The turtle species that lay eggs in the regions are:
-
Caguama, Caretta Caretta, Loggerhead Turtle.
-
Carey, Eretmochelys Imbricata, Hawksbill Turtle.
-
Blanca, Chelonia Mydas, Green Turtle
Most of the life of turtles happens in the sea, nevertheless they need to return to land to deposit their eggs. They look for sandy beaches since these re-join the conditions in order that the development of the embryo is carried out.
