Muyil archaeological Site.

To 22 kilometres to the south of the village of Tulum, Taking the road 307 towards Carrillo Puerto, is the archaeological site of Muyil. This site is particularly attractive due to its location within Sian Ka'an Ecological Reserve.

In addition to the Maya constructions, the site has an interesting thematic path and a bird observation station that helps understanding the vegetation and wildlife surrounding the area.

Muyil is an interesting but not frequently visited site, that began being inhabited in the late preclassic (300 b.c. to 250 a.c.) by the Maya people, whose economy was based on the natural  explotation of the surroundings that include jungle, lakes and ocean.

These ancient Mayas established a basic exchange system taking advantage of their geographical position and means of communication with inhabitants in the North area of Belize, via Boca Paila, Chunyanche and Muyil lagoons as well as the Caribbean Sea.

During the classic period of the Maya culture (250-800/1000 a.c.) due to a demographic increase, a new relationship with other groups in the peninsula was developed. In the late postclassic period, under the ruling of Chichen Itza and after the domain of Mayapan, Muyil was a part of the important coast commercial network that gained relevance in the peninsula.
