EK BALAM
The ancient city of Ek’ Balam welcomes us in the middle of Yucatan’s low jungle with a great plaza where an enormous, impressive and complex building of six floor is. According to the tradition, this was a city where the justice was given and there were celebrated ceremonies of purification of the initiated ones before going to Chichen Itzá.
The city was a fortress; it had five doors with its corresponding sacbhes (white roads). It also had a ball game, a steam-bath –for purification rituals-, an adoratory, and an important sacred cenote.
Ek’ Balam means Ek=star + Balam=jaguar (it may also mean ‘wise man’).
We totally recomend to visit this archaeological site and the beautiful, picturesque contiguous village, where you’ll find great hamacas at low prices.
Curiously, the habitants of this place have decided to stop drinking and selling alcohol. Being far from the usual touristical routes, both the village and the archaeological zone are intact and all its original magic and unique enchant of ancient mayan cities is preserve.
